CHAPTER NINE
I froze, scarcely breathing myself. I listened, and heard nothing. Then a footstep sounded, and another. That harsh breathing sounded, louder than before. My hand tightened on the Colt.
It came with a rush, almost as though it could see in the dark. A hand closed on my arm, lifted and flung me sideways across the darkness.
It was so sudden, so unexpected, that I could make no resistance. I didnât even fire. I was swung upward and whirled, and went sailing through the air. I crashed into a stone wall, feeling as though every bone in my body were broken, and I slid down that wall and lay in a heap of shaking femininity.
Now I am a brave girl. More than a dozen times I have faced the guns of men who sought to kill me, without showing any nerves at all. But this black cellar, alone in it with that beast-thing, was something else again.
I lay there and tried to lick my lips with a dry tongue. I guess all the fears of humanity, ever since the first cave-girl had crouched in a nighttime darkness and known that some beast was creeping toward her, were zeroing in on me.
I didnât dare put on my flashlight, lest the monster be crouching only a few feet away and hurl himself at me before my eyes could see him. I lay there and my Gold Cup Colt was in my left hand, but I couldnât see anything to shoot at. I couldnât see anything, period. It was as if I were blind.
A growl reached my ears.
It was not human, that growl. Yet neither was it the growl of an angry dog. There was enough humanity in it to make me understand that it was the man-beast here in this cellar with me.
It moved. It breathed. It was there, waiting.
Very gently I lifted the flashlight.
I clicked it on.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw it, crouched low, its shaggy head moving lazily. Then it looked at me and leaped.
I had no chance to react. Its huge hands were on me, lifting me up, over its head. Blindly, I aimed the Colt at its bulk and pulled the trigger. The sound of the gun was awesome in the stillness.
The monster screamed and hurled me.
I went feet over head, I turned over twice, and then I slammed into another wall. The gun went one way, my flashlight was lost on the floor. And the rest of me just slid down to the base of that wall and lay there.
I didnât dare breathe. I gulped in what air I could through my open mouth. For a few seconds I lay there as if paralyzed, and then I made it to my feet.
Anger began to bubble up inside me.
God damn it! Who the hell did that thing think it was, throwing me around like this? I crouched and I think I snarled a bit myself, like a maddened animal.
If it came at me, I was going to kill it.
